Wastewater Collection and Treatment
Robert E. Hamilton Consulting Engineers started because Bob Hamilton, as a pioneer in the water supply
and wastewater treatment field, saw the need for his services. When he graduated with a Master's degree
in Sanitary Engineering from the University of Illinois there were only 4000 in the United States with
advanced degrees in the field. Because of that, he was listed in the U.S. Civil Defense Roster as the
contact in this area for protection of water supplies in case of a disaster.
Since that time in 1955 the firm has prepared studies and designs for plants with a population loading as low as 120 to plants
sized for 105,000. One of the early designs for Ranch Oaks Subdivision in Manhattan was used by the Illinois Sanitary Water Board
(the forerunner of IEPA) as an example of excellent design for a small (120 pop.) plant. The Frankfort west plant, which we have
modified several times, has received awards from IEPA for the best operated plant. Incidentally, it is located in the center of a
subdivision. It is the philosophy, based on experience, of the firm that each community has unique requirements for treatment of
their wastewater and regardless of size an efficient plant can be designed to fulfill requirements within a realistic budget.
In addition to the design of wastewater treatment projects we have written numerous facility plans, conducted several SSES studies,
prepared user charge ordinances, and are "on call" to discuss plant operational problems.
Our strive for excellence in wastewater treatment continues today, as we design new treatment plants for our clients. We remain
on the forefront as the process evolves with new environmental regulations, and reach out to Environmental Interest Groups early
in the project to find common ground, which avoids delays later in the permitting process.
